Improper Diet and Sudden Food Changes

Dietary mistakes are said to be one of the leading causes of preventable health emergencies in rabbits.

Rabbits require unlimited high-quality hay/grass as the foundation of their diet. High-quality pellets and fresh greens should complement (not replace) hay. Treat foods such as carrots and fruit should be limited and introduced cautiously and slowly.

Sudden food changes can disrupt a rabbit’s delicate digestive balance. Introducing new vegetables too quickly or offering large amounts of sugary treats (such as fresh or dried fruits) can lead to gastrointestinal distress, expensive veterinary care, or life-threatening complications.

A rabbit’s digestive system depends on consistency. Feeding responsibly means resisting the urge to “treat” in ways that may cause accidental, avoidable harm.
